Course
Description
The
race starts at the Bootleg Canyon restrooms and parking area.
(elev. 2755 ft)
recommend at least 2 bottles.
The course starts on a dirt road down hill for 3 tenths of a mile
turning left on to another dirt road. Follow this for about ¼
of a mile. The road splits again, follow the left road to the
river mountain trail head. This is 1 mile from the race start.
(elev. 2331)
Turn left on the River Mountain trail. This single track trail
is a sandy up hill wash for the first quarter of a mile. The trail
firms up but is a tough 1 ¾ mile up hill climb to the saddle.
(elev. 3224 ft).
From the saddle, turn right for about 100 yards, then left down
the hill about ¼ mile to the Caldera trail. (elev. 3165
ft)
Make a hard right onto the Caldera trail. This will wind around
the east side of the valley for about 1 ½ miles to the
first aid station.
1st aid station 4 ½ miles form the start. (elev. 3016 ft)
60 – 90 minutes running time.
Next aid 2 ½ miles with one tough up hill.
The
next 1 ¼ mile is a sweet down hill to the caldera - mother
trail junction. (There is a Y about ¼ mile before the caldera
junction, take the lower, right hand, trail to the caldera junction).
(elev. 2812 ft)
Take Caldera, the left hand trail, up to the 2nd aid station .
This is another tough climb, 1 ¼ miles up Caldera to West
Leg trail and the 2nd aid station (elev. 3194 ft).
Next aid 4 ½ miles mostly down hill.
Turn
right onto West leg for a fast and fun trip down to the Mother
trail. This is a 2 mile mostly down hill very sweet run to the
mother trail. (elev. 2821 ft).
Turn right off of West leg onto the Mother trail. This will be
about ¼ of a mile of 2 way traffic. At the Y, take the
right hand trail going up the switch backs. It is about ¾
of a mile to the top of the POW trail (elev. 2929 ft).
Turn left off of the Mother trail onto POW and a fast 1 ½
mile down hill run to water hole number 3 (elev. 2460 ft).
There is a junction in a sandy arroyo about 1 mile down from mother
trail, stay right on POW continuing down to the 3rd aid station
and check point.
This ½ mile section of trail from the arroyo junction to
the aid station will be 2 way traffic, watch for oncoming runners.
Next aid 3 ½ miles mostly up hill, recommend at least 2
bottles.
This
first 1/2 mile going out will be 2 way traffic so watch for oncoming
runners.
The trail will split in the wash about ½ mile above the
3rd aid station. Make the right turn going up. This is the Par
None trail that will connect with the mother trail at the Y below
the switch backs. Again this is about ¼ mile of 2 way traffic
so watch for on coming runners. Continue on the Mother trail past
the West leg turn to the Girls Scout trail head (elev. 2797 ft).
No
you are not going to the start-finish line. We are going to beat
this dead horse some more, back to the top of the hill. (elev.
3106 ft)
The
girl scout trail is a nice 1 ½ mile up hill run to aid
station 4. The trail is rocky but a great up hill run. Watch the
flagging because there are several trails that take off from girl
scout. It will be easy to make a wrong turn. At the top of the
hill, turn right and go up the dirt road about 50 yards to the
East Leg Trail. East leg is a right turn off the road. It is almost
all down hill and is very fast. The tail is technical but a sweet
run to the start-finish line. There are a couple of left turns
off of East leg that drop sharply off of the hill. Do not take
these trails. Watch the flagging. East leg will go straight down
the canyon to the rest area (start-finish line). This is the end
of the fun for the 25Krace, too bad runners you should have signed
up the 50K. Still more fun to be had.
50K
runners will continue past the rest area following the lower lake
trail. No road on this loop. The lower lake trail toes down the
hill generally following main road. Cross the power line access
road loop around the small hill and cross the power line access
road again heading toward the mountain. The lower lake trail winds
along above the access road connecting to the River mountain trail.
The run now will be exactly the same route as the first loop.
It is just a little short of 3 ½ miles to the aid station.
